A D colour Internally Flawless 24.31-carat step-cut diamond is set to go under the hammer at Bonhams London December Jewellery sale on December 5. Estimated at £1,300,000 - £1,800,000 ($1,700,000 - $2,300,000), the diamond is from a private collection and this is the first time it has come to auction.
Bonhams UK Director of Jewellery Emily Barber said, “This diamond is a magnificent gem, not only due to its significant size – top-quality diamonds over 20 carats are very rare – but also due to its internally flawless clarity and its exceptional white colour.
The diamond has also been designated as a Type IIa diamond – meaning it is considered chemically pure – and thus possesses exceptional transparency and optical qualities. Interestingly, this is the same classification as the Koh-i-Noor diamond in the British Crown Jewels and the world’s largest cut diamond, the Cullinan I.”
The December sale will also feature Kashmir and Sri Lankan sapphires. The Kashmir sapphires include:
- A sapphire and diamond ring featuring a cushion-shaped 8.08-carat sapphire, estimated at £300,000 - £400,000 ($390,000 - $520,000).
- A sapphire and diamond cluster ring featuring a 9.29-carat cushion-shaped sapphire between brilliant-cut diamonds, with tapered baguette-cut diamond shoulders, estimated at £220,000 - £280,000 ($280,000 - $360,000).
- A 4.08-carat cushion-shaped sapphire in a late 19th century sapphire and diamond brooch estimated at £120,000 - £180,000 ($160,000 - $230,000).
- A sapphire and diamond ring by Asprey with a 3.09-carat sapphire accompanied by a report from SSEF stating that it is of Kashmir origin and may be called ‘royal blue’. The piece is estimated at £60,000 - £80,000 ($78,000 - $100,000).
A Sri Lankan step-cut sapphire and diamond ring, weighing 18.32 carats is also going under the hammer and is estimated at £140,000 - £180,000 ($180,000 - $230,000).
The sale also features a fancy intense blue 1.03-carat diamond set with other diamonds in a ring by Boodles. The piece has a pre-sale estimate of £150,000 - £200,000 ($190,000 - $260,000).
Also featured is a collection of Van Cleef & Arpels jewellery including a pair of ear-clips and a brooch from its Cosmos collection, along with a ruby, emerald, enamel and diamond rose brooch by Lacloche Frères, a gold and rutilated quartz bangle as well as an emerald and diamond ring by Andrew Grima, an aquamarine and diamond brooch by René Boivin and a gold, diamond and gem-set demi-parure by Mellerio Hermanos.
