Stories that connect, deeply touch you personally. That's when they become yours to carry. For me, jewellery and art are both powerful storytelling media. Both enable me to express visually, concepts and feelings for which words alone don’t suffice.
Which is why I embrace both painting and jewellery design so completely. They enable me to express to the world what I would otherwise not be able to express at all. What’s more, in the pictorial storytelling, I leave room for the viewer to interpret my expression in ways that are unique to them alone — evoke feelings that perhaps even I haven’t experienced.
As I had written previously, to have a successful diamond messaging in today’s cultural context, we need to harness the outside-in thinking that augments our inside-out thinking. Diamonds should not be looked at as mere specimens; they have a soul and story. That’s what makes a diamond a diamond!
My diamond paintings The Portal of Empowerment and Radiate Brilliance pay tribute to women. There is a woman at the beginning of all great things. She has the power to energise and elevate humanity.
The Portal of Empowerment features a pink and a blue diamond. It tells our story, as we elevate and empower others, ourselves and society at large for the greater good. Emblematic of the message of women empowerment, the woman in my painting is confident and independent. Her hands are raised, gestures that are symbolic of flight, of touching the sky and breaking glass ceilings.
Elevated, a pink and blue diamond embodies brilliance that is within all of us, waiting to be embraced. The yellow colour is luminous and represents optimism and creativity. The use of shades of blue in the painting signifies the duality of a day and night cycle, reminding of ever-present challenges to overcome. There can be no day without night and vice versa.
Radiate Brilliance celebrates the inner spirit, our power to empower. My painting pays tribute to women, who like diamonds, are brilliant, multi-faceted and unbreakable. The painting features a pink and a blue diamond.
Both paintings express concepts that I have identified with very strongly all my life. The concept materialised because of a woman with purpose — jewellery designer Kara Ross. Kara is the founder of Diamonds Unleashed, a brand with a social purpose that supports women's empowerment globally and has partnered with She's the First and Girls Who Code. Diamonds Unleashed by Kara Ross will offer three jewellery collections, and will donate all net profits from its sales to these two organisations. According to Kara it's about profit with a purpose, and the purpose is to create the next generation of strong women. I am proud to be a part of this movement.
Kara invited me to create paintings and interpret the Diamonds Unleashed logo, that she has envisioned as an international symbol of women’s empowerment. The symbol is two diamonds, one elevated outside the other. Those two shapes together form a heart. The heart symbolises the unifying, philanthropic power of women helping women, to help create the next generation of strong female leaders.
Both paintings were exhibited at the Art Miami Fairs 2015 show. Known as Miami's premier anchor art fair, Art Miami kicks off the opening day of Miami Art Week in the first week of December each year. It is one of the most important annual contemporary art events in the United States, attracting more than 82,000 collectors, curators, museum professionals and art enthusiasts from around the globe annually. And those are the many set of eyes that see the diamond message I want to express.
